i use ntl too--occasionally having the same problem as well as connecting at all--very often get engaged tone--hardly ever happened b4--not sure if they are cutting us off deliberately but also they have just changed their dial up number/procedure--the dial up number now contains **** instead of numbers so their is no way u can connect except thru ntl software--u cannot set it up manually and by pass ntl logon procedure since u don't know the number--why would they do that anyone?
unless you have bought a special package you should be able to use the details on this page (plus your ntlworld username and password) to setup a dialup networking connection: http://www.ntlworld.com/help/generalHelp/settings.

They may be secretive if it involves a free number (0800) for a service you have to subscribe to.
thanks j2--however the free number listed on the site--126308005190100--the 1263 is to route it through ntl for those on a bt line is the one i used to use--ntl emailed to say this number was to be closed and i should download new dialup software if i wanted to continue to use the net--having done this the number displayed at dialup is--147008089****77--again the 1470 is to route it thru ntl--not knowing what the *'s are there is no way u can manually setup a connection
How about 1470 0808 990 9877? Found here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~theom/riscos/nt

hi j2--set up a connection using the number u suggested but it wouldn't connect--constantly got engaged tone--further i was unable to connect using my existing number until i had deleted the new connection and reinstalled the ntl dialup procedure--i kept getting the message--connection blocked by remote computer--all very mysterious but broadband is due in this area on 10th dec so i am intending to ditch ntl when i sign up for it--was thinking of bt broadband--any suggetions urself
Hello aj, sorry about the number, obviously a wrong 'un. It is suspicious if they have to keep the number secret. About broadband, we already had NTL cable TV so I went for NTL cable broadband. That was nearly three years ago and the service has been excellent. As far as ADSL goes, I have only experienced BT which is OK but certainly not as trouble free as my cable service. Perhaps I have just been lucky. One things for sure: once you are on broadband you will wonder how you ever put up with a dialup connection!
thanks j2--we have nothing other than bt libnes in this area--no cable or ntl lines or telewest or anybody else--i connect to ntl thru an adapter box on a bt line--ntl is cheaper of course--may give it a go--cheers
