A friend of mine has recently emigrated to Australia and needs to ring an 0800 number in the UK, is there a prefix he should be dialing first, or can he just dial the number directly?

Unfortunately Freefone or Toll Free numbers can't be dialed internationally, at least not directly...It might be possible using an operator but then you will be paying for an assisted call......For the info anyways the International Dialing Code for the UK is 0044 the omitting the first 0 in the number you dial the rest.
most of these numbers you can call from outside of the uk - you can call this company - http://www.cleartoneholdings.co.uk/

they can give you details regarding 0800 numbers
