There are different types of cards and they have many many uses. The most common uses include:

Wifi adaptor, to connect to thebinternet wirelessly

Tv card - to watch and record tv programmes on your pc

GPS - for satnav from your laptop

Sound cards - for more advanced sound

Graphics cards - for advanced graphics

Do you mean a memory card?

They are small cards inside a digital camera that store photos. You can't edit with those. You can store all sorts of files, music, photos and video on them though - the bigger the better.

PC Cards just allow devices to connect to your pc or laptop easily.

To edit photos and videos you need software - there are lots of free programmes if your pc didn't come bundled with anything suitable.
My camera came with its own editing software.
