Is it ok to close your laptop i.e. shut the lid properly, while it's on?

Yes, it will put the laptop into sleep or hibernation mode - or turn it off, depending on how it is set up.

It's generally not ok to leave the computer on while the lid's closed though, as it can overheat and damage your screen (the keyboard is usually an air vent), but as Ethel says, as long as it goes to sleep it's fine.
