What I'm trying to do is this. I want to print on A4 paper but print business card size sections that I can then laminate & cut but I've tried & failed. Does anyone know the settings I should be using? be so grateful for your help if you can guide me in the right direction. thanks

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.You've not stated which software you're using. If it's Microsoft Word, it's got a built-in ability to produce business cards. Word assumes that you're using business cards on a scored A4 sheet (such as those produced by Avery and other stationery firms) but there's nothing to prevent you from simply printing onto a normal A4 sheet and cutting it up.
These instructions are for Word 2002 but all recent versions should be roughly similar:
Go to Tools > Letters & mailings > Envelopes & Labels.
Select the Labels tab. Click Options.
Change Label Products to 'Avery A4 & A5 Products'
Choose one of the Business Card options from the menu. (The size will be displayed in the right-hand panel).
Click OK.
Choose either 'Full page' or 'Single Label'
Enter your text
To change text size, fonts and colours, highlight the relevant text and select 'Font.
Click Print.

I've done this in Word and Lotus Wordpro, double sided printing on plain A4 then laminate and guillotine.
I have the page in Landscape but some of my early ones were portrait. Divide your page into three columns and use centre alignment. I get four cards per column, you need to do a test and then tweak the spacing until happy. I use various font sizes down to 4 to get small increases. In MS Word my margins are top 0.54, bott 0.44 with 0.45 both sides. No gutter.
