Can I buy anything like this?

can you get something similar to a laptop I guess, that you could sit say downstairs with, and type e.mails and do spreadsheets etc. without being connected to anything and then transfer same to the computer or printer. (i.e.when the kids are asleep) Something small I mean. Sorry if this is a stupid (or obvious) question.

Why not a laptop, or ultra mobile pc - which is a very small laptop with a 8" screen.

If you want to do spreadsheets you can't go too small.

Thank you for your replies. Yes I am thinking price, I wanted something reasonable for my daughter, who has a lot of pen-friends, and she finds it difficult to get on her computer in the evening when the children are in bed.She cannot have the computer downstairs either.Will look out for more info on the pocket surfer mentioned when anyone posts. Pocket surfer is no good at all for your daughter's needs - it is simply a web browser that connects to the internet.

No good for spreadsheets and so on.

Your daughter will be able to buy a very basic laptop for around �300 (new) which will do the job. If she wanted to connect it to the internet she could buy a wireless router which means she will be able to surf the net without being connected to the modem by wires.
