can you save information from computers with different operating systems on to the same external hard drive

yes but you may not neccessarily be able to use the files on both computers.
Yes you can, no problem, I do it all the time.
Make sure you have the external drive in a format that's readable by all operating systems.

GNU/Linux distros don't like NTFS much, and Windows doesn't like ext3/reiserFS etc. filesystems much either.

Often the best filesystem to use is FAT32.
