artist doubles on ipod

hi. when i scroll through the artists on my ipod lots of them come up double or triple even though there aren't doubles. does anyone know why this is and/or how to stop it. it's fairly annoying. i'm sure i saw something about this in Q magazine ages ago but i don't remember the answer. thanks!

Check it and alter it in iTunes.

They'll be slightly differently named, or with slightly different album names, etc.

Highlight all the files in question (that are of the same artist, for example), right-click one of them and click get info. You should then be able to change the artist name of all of them at once. Now set it the same for all of them.
