Yankinlimey, my question regarding ripping MP3 music files, to which you were good enough to answer, is about to move off the bottom of the technology topics.

Thanks also Ethel I cannot find out what version my Media Player is, but I have two one is on a Pc I have had for about 2 years which operates on windows XP and my notebook that I have had about 3 months is on Windows Vista.

Here is my original question, if it is any help.

How do I copy music files in mp3 format (not wma) from a CD to my computer or SD memory card?

My computer operates on Window Vista.

In your Windows Media Player click 'help' - top left of screen - and 'about'.

This will tell you the version.

To copy as mp3 I click on the little tiny arrow in the 'rip' tab, click on 'format' and choose mp3.

They should then burn, 'copy', as mp3

hummm now I am confused.
I am running XP but am sure Vista is pretty much the same.
Lets use windows media player, it comes as standard with windows.

Open windows media player program.
Click on Tools, then Options.
Click on the Rip Music tab.
Rip Format settings-select MP3.
Uncheck box for cppy protect .
Check box for Rip CD when inserted (just to make it simpler).
Check box for Eject when completed.
Click ok.

Insert CD, connect to internet (if you want the player to find media information automatically).
Should rip automatically.
If not- just click on the Rip tab to do it manually.

When Ripping process is complete.
Find the location of the files saved to pc. Usually found in the My Music folder. but you can check the location in the Tools, Options, Rip Tab.

Connect your memory card to computer however you do it. I use a card reader via usb. Find your card and open it.
Now open the music folder containing the music you want to transfer. I like to then tile the windows so its easier to transfer.

Select the files you want to transer. Right click , copy then paste. or drag and drop. Up to you.

First Ethel my Windows Media player is Version 10.00.00.4058, did what you said still no luck.

I have tried it on my other computer running XP the same as yours. After clicking the right mouse button in Windows Media Player, I managed to find Tools, Options etc.

Clicked on the rip music tab and selected MP3, could not find box for copy protect, but did check the other two boxes. When I clicked on Rip Music tab, it still came up with this message again.

Windows Media player cannot rip the track because a compatible MP3 Encoder is not installed on your computer.
Install a compatible MP3 encoder or choose a different format to rip to (such as Windows Media Player).

Never thought this would be so difficult.

Download the version 11 - it might solve all your problems.

Yes, like Ethel suggests, try downloading Media Player again and fresh install.

It normally is really quite straight forward.

I have up-dated to version 11 on my windows XP computer as you have suggested, and tried to up-date on my laptop which runs on Vista, but it says that I cannot downgrade because my version is already 11.0.6000.6344.

I know this will not work because I have already tried, like I have said before. What about this free-codec as suggested by rojash?
