Outlook Express images do not show

Can anyone please tell me what I can do to enable images in emails to show. I just get a small square with a red cross in. Thanks in anicipation..............

You might need to get the sender(s) of the e-mail(s) to re-send them. As I understand it, having a check mark in that box may actually stop the images being downloaded to your PC, rather than simply preventing them from being displayed. So removing the tick won't enable you to see images in e-mails which are already on your PC, because they were never downloaded with the mail.
I think that's correct but I'm not 100% sure. The best thing to do is send yourself an e-mail, with an embedded picture, and see if you can view it. (To insert a picture in an e-mail, go to Insert > Picture. Click 'Browse', navigate to the location of the picture file and double-click on it).
If you can view the picture, it proves my theory. If not, post again.

Well.... I thought it was!! I can send myself an email with a picture in it, but today, I have several e-mails that contain those little boxes with a red cross in. I have checked the security option (above) and it remains unchecked as you suggested. Anyone any other ideas please?? It is driving me nuts!

I'm running Outlook Express 6 under Windows Millennium, so I haven't actually got the same security options as you have. However, I'm guessing that there's another box which needs to be unchecked.
When you send yourself an e-mail, containing a picture, the body of the text and the image will be located on the same server. Many commercial organizations which send out e-mails host the images on a remote server. The e-mail which is received by your ISP (or other e-mail service) doesn't actually contain the picture. It simply includes HTML coding which says 'fetch a picture from the location given here'. (It's similar to the way that people can embed Youtube videos into their own websites. The video isn't actually on user's server. It's just called from somewhere else).
I'm guessing that somewhere under Tools > Options > Security, you'll find a box labelled something like 'block content from external servers'. If so, uncheck that box and you should start seeing images in all new e-mails.

You could, of course, simply use a different e-mail client. I'm a great fan of the Firefox web browser (which is a thousand times better than Internet Explorer) but I've never got round to switching to its little sister, the Thunderbird e-mail software. However, every ABer who uses it says how wonderful it is:
