Dell Desktop PC

I've seen a second hand Dell PC for sale for �150. Spec is as follows:

Intel Celeron 2.3Ghz Processor
80GB Hard Drive
1GB RAM
DVD / CDRW Drive
14" TFT Monitor
Lexmark Colour Deskjet Printer
keyboard and optical mouse.
Comes with Windows XP Home Edition SP2, Microsoft Office and McAfee Anti-Virus software installed.

Is it worth investing in?

It sounds good Spec but where is it coming from? ebay? private seller? shop? is there any guarantee?

I would recommend getting assurance from the seller that there are no problems with it such as strange lockups or slowing down of the system.

Are the versions of Windows and Office genuine because if so they are worth a fair bit.

See if they are supplying the master CDs for Windows and Office.

If they are NOT genuine then I dont think this is a great deal.

If you need to do a full reinstall for some reason, and you have not got the Windows and Office CDs, then you will have to go out and buy them.

A 14" screen is almost unusable and you will almost certainly need to get a better one.

Generally second hand PCs dont have a great resale value.

Here is a deal for a new PC.

I know it is �100 more, and I know the memory is a bit low, but for the money you are getting a new machine, faster processor, bigger hard disk, DVD rewriter, printer, and MS Works and other software (all genuine).

It does has Vista rather than XP which is probably a negative.

Add 512Mb of memory (which is easy to do) and you have a nice little machine.

I'll check about the master copies as the ad says "installed" which suggests they might not be included. Alhtough I'm now thinking for the hassle of it it's just better to buy a new one with guarantees included in a few months time

If it's a Dell, you should be able to restore it to its factory condition using the Dell recovery software, so you won't necessarily need the windows disks (but you will probably lose Office if you do this).

Try googling the exact model number and "restore" to see if there is a relatively painless way of doing this, then you will have no worries about system performance because it will be as new.
