cable receivers

i have recently joined virgin media after leaving sky after a number of years, i understand cable receivers can be bought and used in place of the virgin media box(am i correct), so as to save on subscription costs. can you good peoplle tell me is it worth purchasing one of these box's and which one, as i come across 3 or 4. can someone take time to explain the process for setting up the channels, the technical problems to overcome, which chanells are available and how many, or am i just wasting time and effort going down this 'road' i know not asking for much but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Only Virgin Media subscription equipment may be connected to the VM cable network.

I think you have confused the situation whereby you can use a SKY digibox to receive non subscription channels via the Freesat card...

thanks for your answers, i'm not confusing it with the freesat or thse hookie boxes, actually i wanted information about the eurobox and starview 2 boxes which are available (check websites), which channels will be available, and if available using a virgin media line.

thanks ethel, if they're illegal why are they so readily available on the open market, how come vm have not done anything about it.

The digiboxes are not illegal to sell but you may not connect non VM equipment to the VM cable network.

thanks kempie, so how sre these boxes connected, if not via a VM line, which other ways can they be connected. Excuse my ignorance but do i have to get the suppliers of these boxes to install a line for me?
