What is a V.9x modem? What is V.9x vs. v.92?

I'm trying to figure out what type of modem I have. My modem is a Conexant D480 MDC v.9x modem. What is the difference between v.9x and v.90 and v.92? What's the deal with the x? Aren't modems either v.90 or v.92? which one is mine?
