I have a HP Scanjet 4070 Photosmart scanner and I need to scan some text only documents and save them to file to upload. The problem is on the current setting the file sizes are way too big and I need to alter the settings to the lowest quality to reduce the file sizes. Does anybody know how to do this?

Hi,
you need to change the scan resolution. For text 75dpi is sufficient. normally this is set on the first screen of your scanner software. You may have to turn on the advanced settings page to get more choices. pictures are often scanned at 300dpi but text need not.

All scanners produce an image of what they see on the glass, but where you only want to produce just text, then you need a second stage called optical character recognition OCR.

Do you know if you have OCR either with your scanner package, or as a standalone package on your PC?

If so you need to use that to convert the scanned image (which as you rightly say is large) into text characters which can then be saved as Word or Notepad files which will be much smaller.
My HP scanner has the option to save as a .pdf which is a smaller file type.
