wireless browsing probs

my vista laptop is connecting to wireless networks but absolutely, without fail, will not browse the internet. i had wireless browsing for about an hour on the day i set up the router, until i restarted the computer and since then ive not been able to wireless browse the net. i keep getting 'server not found' when i try to open firefox wirelessy. it works fine with the blue (ethernet?) cable plugged in. ive done all the helpdesk troublehooting and been told that the only solution is to recover (not restore) the system. im not teccy... is this a good idea please....any thoughts?

What router are you using?

Can you connect to its admin pages, the 192.168.1.1 (or whatever) address?

its a d-link dsl-2640. do you mean can i connect to the router admin pages, using the 192..etc but with the wire in? i will have to check.

Wire in or out.

There are two possible issues: you cannot connect to the router, or the router is having issues connecting to the outside internet.

If you can connect to the 192. stuff, and can change router settings etc. (either wireless or wired, doesn't matter), then it means the router is connecting to your fine. So perhaps the router has been disconnected from your ISP. Restarting the router may help, but some have a button in the settings pages to restart the connection.

its a strange problem for sure. i have been into the router settings (with my isp tech support), so the router and I are communicating ok. yet my ISP insist everything is stable from their end too. this is the second router im on, the first one did exactly the same thing. im a bit confused to what troubleshooting ive done with which. when i get home, i will try restarting the router and see what happens.

Are you connecting your main telephone socket to a microfilter to the router/modem?

Also, is every other phone in the house connected to a microfilter too?

there are 3 phone points in the house, but only 1 phone. weve followed the wires as best we can (they go behind skirtings and under carpets) and we are pretty sure its the main socket we are using. (is the main socket identified by having a box attached to the wall? if so, it is defo the main socket), there is a microfilter on the phone that is connected (we have had 3 microfilters to try), but no microfilters attached to any extensions. does this matter if the extensions are not being used? and also, are the microfilters necessary for wireless use?

If the other adapters aren't being used, then it doesn't need microfilters. They're only for where you're using either a phone or router.

And yes, they're needed for even wireless use. They just split the phone line into a part for phone and part for internet. Otherwise the signals will get confused and cause issues.
