I have a website that I manage using frontpage (with rather a lot of help) is there a way to put a hit counter on? Remembering I am a novice.

Some people think it is NOT a good idea to have a hit counter.

Lets face it if the figure is low it will not look good for your site.

Someone goes to your site, sees visitor number is 47, and thinks it cannot be much of a site.

You should be able to find out how many people have visited the site from your ISP.

Any website can have a hit counter, irrespective of the software used to create it. The problem is there are dozens of free hit counters available, just Google Hit Counter to see what I mean. Problem is a basic hit counter will only tell you how many files your server has provided. For example if its serves your home page and there are 8 images on the page, it will tell you that you have received 9 hits � 1 for the page and one for each of the images it also supplied. Basic hit counters make no attempt at distinguishing unique visitors, so you will never know how many individuals have visited your site. Hits don�t reflect actual visitors.

Most importantly basic hit counters give no other information about your visitors, i.e. where did they come from, how long did they stay on your site, what did they type in to find you, did they arrive via a search engine, and if so which one, which are your most popular pages etc etc.

If you are serious about your website, and you really want to know about your visitors and not just the number of files your server delivered in any 24 hour period, then you should host your site with an ISP who provides a recognised stats package. With most reputable ISPs the cost of the stats package is included in your annual hosting charge.

One final point - most free hit counters are visible on your website, and as vehelpfulguy rightly says, everyone can see your counter.

Stats packages are not visible on your site, and are password protected and only available to you the site owner.
