no other takers ....

what exactly is happening ... do you get as far as the desktop?
I didn't really like the look of this one, but my suggestion would to be check the following in the registry

this is a registry edit so do so with caution

goto run on start menu and type regedit

on the left hand side do the following

double click hkey_local_machine
Double click software
double click microsoft
douple click windows nt
double click currentVersion
double click winlogon

Then on the right hand side scroll down and find shell and make sure under the data heading it says Explorer.exe

if it doesn't double click on shell on the right hand side and change the data field so it does say explorer.exe

as I said it's a registry edit so do so with caution and don't blame me if it goes wrong!
I had this on an old PC and it was due to spyware. Got rid of that using Adaware and the Pc worked fine.

ACtheTROLL: no i don't get as far as the desktop, it just gets as far as the screen with user login and i type in the password the screen goes blank and then My Documents folder opens on a black clank background

ChuckFickens: i did all that and it was under the data heading
back to you AC ;-)
found this after a google trawl

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writ eup.jsp?docid=2003-061315-4216-99&tabid=3

it's not a simple fix for a novice though.
how about safe mode

when you switch on ... bash the f8 button ...
if you get the timing right you should see a menu offering safe mode ... does that work?
if it does - try to remove your video drivers.

If not ... what CDs came with the machine (it's not good I'm afraid)?

I'm thinking either system repair ... or a complete rebuild.

how much stuff on there that you can't live without?
the rebuild is the better option - a newly built machine ... mmmmm shiney! ... but only if you know how.
