I remember being told once that video cassettes should always be stored standing up rather than lying down. Is this true?

I'd say that keeping them out of direct sunlight, away from strong magnets and inside their covers / sleeves away from dust is more important.
I've just copied some videos, stored as above, from the early 1980's onto DVD and although inferior quality to DVD they were just as clear as when the recordings were made.
