In the past when I've had many pics of the same topic ie a birthday party,I've been able to click on the first one and title it then click onto the last one and they would all come up with the same title but numbered consecutively. For some reason this isn't happening now,it might be me I don't know, any ideas please.

You give a general name for the pictures, like "holiday" and then as they are downloaded they are then numbered "holiday 001", "holiday 002" and so on.
If you are viewing the pictures in a folder then on the View menu there is an option called "Arrange icons by" and you can choose "Name" and this will put them in number order.

If you haven't managed it yet...
Start up Irfanview.
File/batch conversion-renaming
Under look in navigate to the folder that holds the images to be renamed.
Click add all under Input files.
In output directory, navigate to the folder you want to save the renamed files to.
Work as: click Batch rename.
Batch renaming settings: click set rename button and enter the new name you want on the images.
Add the same amount of # as digits (up to 999 photos is 3 #)
Set starting index (1)
Set Increments to 1. Click ok.
Finally click the Start button under the Input files.
All the images listed in the Input files window should now be renamed to *name001* etc. in the location that you have designated.
