Connecting a wireless router with a TalkTalk modem

can anyone help me. I have a talk talk modem for my broadband and now I just got a netgear router so I can get internet access of rmy laptop. I have tried everything I can to try and connect it but it just dosnt seem to work.

I don't know much about these things but my son set up a similar system for me and the modem was not necessary.
