I bought some of these re-writeable discs ages ago and have only just takem one out to try. I put it in the machine (DVD recorder) and it says "This disc cannot be recorded". Any ideas?

DVD RAM is fairly recently technology for the dvd recorder - your recorder probably can't handle them.

What make/model is it, and how old?

It is a new machine and the DVD disc is older than the machine, as I bought them with my first machine, around 4 years ago!
But what make and model is it?

As it is a new machine, you will have the manual which will tell you which disks are compatible
Very few DVD recorders support DVD RAM.

Panasonic invented it and I think they may be one of the few companies to support it.

All DVD recorders support the two main formats - DVD-R (minus R) and DVD+R (plus R)

You may have bought yourself some expensive coasters !
My panasonic is RAM. I'll buy them off you. :)
