slow running ab on my pc

basically as the title suggests. this site has slowed down to the point as to be impossible to use. i now know it to be my pc as i am posting from another ( late shift at work, not at all busy) when i click on a link i get a load of gobbledegook scrolling across the bottom of the screen in the dialogue box. i can make out things like google ad syndication, the effect is that pages take forever to load and sometimes end in a blank screen. there is only one other site that behaves like this so i think the machine is otherwise healthy. it's not state of the art about five years old and running windows xp. i guess it's caught some kind of a bug but how to find it? norton has'nt spotted anything. please help.
