I sympathize completely. I live on the very edge of broadband availability. I have half a mg on a good day and dial-up speeds on others. Very poor mobile signals also on all networks but I bought a 3 dongle as their phone reception is best in my area but the dongle only gives me a poor broadband connection. No faster than a relly good dial up I'd say. If you come across a solution I'd love to know what it is. Good luck mate

my point Ethel was that cable is only found in conurbations with a largish population. if the OP was on the edges of one then chances are they'd have a phone signal as well because the networks look after the population in these areas.. My nearest conurbation has a population in excess of 10,000. They don't have cable there but they do have phone masts and coverage for all the networks.
When a phone network says they have 99% coverage, what they actually mean is that they cover 99% of the population not the land mass. There are still vast areas of this country that have no phone signal at all. I would doubt, though I can't prove it obviously, that there is anywhere in this country that has cable without a phone signal on one of the networks

I have same problem and I live in a city (Southampton).
Our house is against a steep hill which blocks TV signals so we have to use cable. Although we could pay extra and have a BT line installed which would give broadband, we use Virgin cable for phone and internet connection. However, we do not get digital services yet although for years we have been told we'll be getting it soon. (Trouble is our TV quality is also very poor as Virgin's receivers are by the docks collecting interference from the cranes and planes coming into Southampton airport! - Can't even use satellite as hill is on the soth side of us and would block line of sight!)
I bought a 3 mobile broadband device but it s very eratic and usually is slower than the cable dial up on the desktop machine - probably because of poor signal due to our hill.
Apart from spending even more on having BT installed, I'd also love to hear of any other (cheap) way to get broadband here.

hey chrisrob, you'll like this... I've just had the Open Reach (BT) guy round to look at moving my little grey box of theirs on the outside wall. he said that moving it to the other side of the property where the office is would save 20 metres or so of cable and therefore improve my broadband.
