Simple answer

Yes they will eventually replace DVD's but DVD's will be available for some time yet.

Much like the switch from VHS video tape to DVD.
I am absolutely certain that when the time comes to replace your dvd player with a lovely new Blu Ray player, it will play your old dvds too.

I fink the oooja will work with the whatnot.

like chuck says it's only cd to dvd next is blu-ray ...
At the mo - the round thing is the same size .... so no problem
if the next doo dah is a pluggy inny thingy
then that will end the optical disk trend.

if you are thinking of buying I remember when a dvd burner cost over 500 - same now for blu-ray give it a while and they'll be down to 20 or 30
and the disks will be given away in the sun
