An IDE to USB adapter cable is a good idea (providing you are using XP, usb is a whole load of trouble otherwise), you can plug your hard drive straight into your usb port. I used one of these after my old disk went. IDE - Usb cables on ebay

The easiest (and quickest) way i've found is to simply connect your old hard disc as a slave drive to your new one (or as a secondary master/slave). And then simply copy the files as normal. It's not any more complicated than tomd's method but this way should save you money and time on buying the adapter.

if you are upgrading your boot drive and need to do a perfect copy you can use Norton Ghost which is part of Norton Systemworks Pro(Note the Pro bit Ghost is not in the standard version), just make sure you copy from and to the correct drives.

Do as sideymun said. Though some bios might automatically detect your old drive and start booting from it, depending on the way it's set up. You can change the boot sequence in the bios.

Go to http://www.miray.de/home/index.html and download HDclone program. It can copy a complete harddrive.
