For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.An IDE to USB adapter cable is a good idea (providing you are using XP, usb is a whole load of trouble otherwise), you can plug your hard drive straight into your usb port. I used one of these after my old disk went.

The easiest (and quickest) way i've found is to simply connect your old hard disc as a slave drive to your new one (or as a secondary master/slave). And then simply copy the files as normal. It's not any more complicated than tomd's method but this way should save you money and time on buying the adapter.
