Windows XP - Running MEGA SLOW!!

What is the recommended system scan to see why my computer is running so slow, My virtual memory is low also, can some1 help me to make this run faster? It is a friends pc i am on, and it has no AV or Spyware, I am aware thats not normal, but it wont let me get on to any site without having to wait 3 hours hmm... so i thought if i done a scan or something i can see whats going on ? Can some1 help!

The fact that this computer doesn't have an AV program or Spyware would point massively to that being one of the problems. WIth none of these on board, the PC could be clogged with all sorts of rubbish. Download "Ccleaner slim" from http://www.piriform.com and use that to get rid of anything which shouldn't be there.
Then, without fail, install an AV program (I suggest AVG 8.0 free edition/Avast! for free or, better still, NOD32 as a paid for AV program), and run that.
Only re-install Windows XP as a last resort. It DOES speed things up, but be prepared to spend a good few hours downloading updates from the internet after you've re-installed. (not to mention having to re-do things like e-mail settings and re-installing all the other programs that where there before).
