Free program to make songs louder?

I was wondering if there is a free program that allows you to increase the volume of songs when played back?
my ipod is at maximum and still the album is very quiet.

i have downloaded an album recently which is very quiet when played at the same volume as other albums/songs.

thanks but too involved for me.

on reflection, my best bet is unlocking my ipod nanos volume level but the progs available seem to be for older gen nanos.

Not hard at all

Open audacity and then open the file you want to increase the volume of, press ctrl+A to select all then select amplify from the effects menu and move the slider up a little at a time clicking preview each time until the volume is ok then click OK and save the file
