Server side technology, like PHP or SQL, as opposed to front end / client side technology, like ASP.

ASP is server side (hence Active Server Page). A 'backend' usually refers to what does most of the processing of a system so a database server (HPUX with Oracle 9i) and applications server (Windows 2000 using MSMQ) could be described as the backend to SAP.
