I have a disc, so I pop the disc in and let it run? Sorry Im being a bit dense!! Thank you... How does it run and not load fully...
You should never have two antivirus products on your PC at once, so you're right to uninstall McAfee.

Viruses don't come out of thin air. They only arrive via the internet or via external media. So you can use any PC, without any virus protection at all for as long as you like, with no risk whatsoever as long as you're not connected to the internet and don't use any suspect external media.

If your new product is on a disk (from a reputable source), simply disconnect from the internet, uninstall McAfee and install the new software from the disk.

If you need to download the software, do so before uninstalling McAfee. (You'll only be downloading the new installation program onto your PC. You won't yet have the new antivirus program installed, so there will be no conflicts between the two products). Then disconnect from the internet, uninstall McAfee and run the installation program which you've downloaded.

Thank you both :)
Your subsidiary post wasn't there when I started my post.

Disconnect from the internet. Uninstall McAfee. Insert the installation disk for your new software. If it's a commercial disk it should start the installation program automatically. (If it's a disk which a friend has copied a free program to, double-click on the icon for your CD (or DVD) drive. Then double-click on 'setup', 'install' or whatever else the installation program is called). From then on you should just follow the on-screen prompts.

Thank you... You have been very helpful... can I push my luck ever so slightly further? Can I ask what Java is, I have a small icon with a steaming cup ... I have no idea!

Jo
Java is a programming language that a lot of web pages use for some of the fancy effects and a lot of programs also use it too (like openoffice, amongst others) you do need it.

So its good to keep updating it ? Just notice too the eye icon with a no entry symbol, what's that? Thanks
Yes keep updating it... however annoyingly every time it updates to a new version it just leaves the old one installed but not needed.

goto control panel and then add remove programs and you can remove all but the latest version of java.
If you place your curser on it, it will tell you what it is. Click on it and you will get more information.
Ooops !! Cursor. :)
