... and then there's the matter of tray app, which keeps trying to instal on my pc and is driving me nuts. does anyone have any foolproof method of getting rid of this appalling nuisance? i've got rsi and having to cancel these windows every time they come up (20 or more times every time i boot up) is doing me no good . yes, i have an HP printer ...

You've obviously recognised that the tray app problem is related to your printer's software but you've not stated what you've already tried. Simply inserting the HP installation disk into your drive, when you see that annoying message, might do the trick. Otherwise uninstall all your HP software and reinstall it.

Take a look at the programs which are set to run at startup. Perhaps you can locate the one which is producing this message?

Go to Start > Run
Type 'msconfig' (without the quotation marks).
Click 'OK'
Click the 'Startup' tab.
Click to remove the ticks alongside any software you don't want to run at startup.
Click 'Apply'
Click 'OK'
Restart your computer.

i am so p*ssed off that i am tempted to parcel up the whole kit and caboodle and send it to HP with a messager telling them exactly where to stick their crap product/s. i will never buy anything HP again, that's for sure

Don't blame HP. Their products are excellent. Blame Microsoft. Windows (which is at the root of your problem) is, and always has been, totally cr@p.

I've just found a question similar to yours on the HP support forum, with a solution which will hopefully work.

Follow these instructions but instead of removing the Psprinters entry, look for the Tray App one and remove that instead. Restart your PC after following the instructions:

Chris, it worked. I followed your earlier checklist and, when I got to Startup, I unticked everything that had HP in it. Tray App has gone. EUBLOODYREKA! What I'll do tomorrow (after a good night's kip) is retick each of these entries, one by one, until I've found the one that generates Tray App. Mate, you are a genius and I feel as if the weight of the world is off m'shoulders. Thanks a million.
