switching broadband - how easy is it?
11 Answers
I have an Apple Mac and am thinking of switching from Tiscali to SKY broadband.
I know I will lose my tiscali email addresses - which is fine. But is it easy? I give Sky my MAC code and then do they literally switch it over? Will I have to set up anything again on my Mac for internet use or will the router do it all?
I realise I will have to set up a new email account with the SKY email address but just want to know if the internet has to be set up too.... and how I do it/...

if you want to use it wirelessly then you will have to setup your wireless connection, again not tricky, if wired then plug in and away you go.
I would suggest that you take this opportunity to setup an email address with one of the many free email providers such as hotmail or googlemail, then if you change ISP in the future you don't loose your email address.

Do I have to use their router??? I have not had positive experiences with 3rd party supplied routers... and if its one thing that sends me off the scale of anger its a computer that wont connect to the internet!
Can I not just use my own wireless router (which I bought.. so not a freebie) and change some settings on that??

yep, if you purchased your router then that can be used with any broadband supplier, you'll just need to login to the admin pages and change the username and password to the new sky ones.
though I believe that sky are supplying netgear routers at the moment, and if that's the case they are one of the best routers about.

if it is a d'link then when you need to change the details do the following
open your browser and type into the address bar http://192.168.0.1 and hit enter.
when prompted enter the username Admin (note capitol A) and click ok (leave password blank)
this should open the router admin pages.
in the router admin pages you should see a setup button along the top, click this, then look in the left hand pane and you should see an internet button, if you click this it will take you to the page you need to change the username and password on.
your current username will be your tiscali email address, simply change this to the one supplied by sky and enter your new password below it, save the settings and your router should now connect to the sky broadband.

You can't use your own router. The one Sky provide has the connection details embedded in it and they do not provide any of the account information for you to use your own.
I know because I have SKY and with 15 years in IT I have the knowledge on how to do it if it was possible. It its technically possible (but not easy) to do put it is against the T&C's and they regularly send router updates which would tell them you are using your own router.
Having said that their router is fine, never once had a problem with it.
