I am just configuring my laptop with Ubuntu installed.
I already have set up on my home PC (Running XP Pro) a Virtual Private Network. Very simply, I go to Start, Connect to and enter the IP address and the password. This connects me to my work and then I can enter the details of my personal pc into remote desktop.
How do I connect in Ubuntu?

I think that 8.04 you have to install the VPN client, but I also think it may be installed already in 8.10
click on the network manager down by the clock and see if you have a option for VPN's if you do it's pretty straight forward from there.... if you haven't then...
click applications > add remove. do a search for pptp and in the list that comes up select and install VPN connection manager.
once that has installed restart the computer and then when you click on the network manager you should have the VPN options. if you've setup a windows one it should be pretty straight forward from here.

thanks - trying that now - another quick question
it is 8.04 - and OpenOffice is part of it (but 2.4 as opposed to 3.) It also doesn't have a Check for updates section under Help and although I have left it running for a while, it hasn't notified me that there is an update (and there is nothing Under Tools, Options etc)
Am I best of downloading a new copy of the latest version?
Finally, I am also looking for some software (preferably free) that will allow me to capture live screen images (and also talk) so that I can do some tutorial videos - any ideas?

Okay, managed to connect to the VPN - but when trying to remote desktop I am stuck. All I usually do is type in the IP address of my work computer, my login name and my password.
If I try using the remote dektop viewer, it simply asks for Host and Port. Not sure what to do now (If I type in my user name into Host, that doesn't work, if I type in the IP address, that doesn't work either
