Ipod Nano trouble

Hi- my daughter bought an Ipod nano 8gb the other day, and she's downloaded some of her own cds and also a few songs from itunes. Tonight she tried to download some more songs from itunes but her ipod keeps disconnecting itself. Her device name is not in the list on the left hand side and also it has come up with a sign saying that her ipod is corrupted. We have restored the settings but it hasn't seemed to work. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it just be that the ipod is faulty-as I say she only bought it a few days ago. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
