What will help narrow it down is if you say want you want to do with it.
Is it going to be very portable, if so you need a smallish screen, light weight, and long battery life.
Or is it going to be on the same desk day after day in which case you could go for a 17" screen, and not worry about the weight or battery life.
Are you going to play any games?
The type of games you play means you have to think very hard about the graphics capability. If you are not going to play games then you do not need to worry too much about the graphics.
So as you can see, an idea of how the laptop is going to be used will help narrow down any suggestions.

The other thing you may want to think about is Windows Vista, and the new version of Windows coming out in October.
Vista has had some very bad press, and for that reason Microsoft are replacing it quicker than they normally would with Windows 7 in late October.
So they dont kill the sales of PCs and laptops over the next few months they have said that they will offer a free upgrade to Windows 7 if you buy certain Vista computers now.
Dell have already announced this offer on some of their laptops, so it may be worth looking at them.
They are offering the Inspiron 15 with a free upgrade to Windows 7.

I got my laptop from pc world for 399 and its a really good one as well.
I would reccommend going to PC world because they advice you on what will be the best laptop for you and what sort of things you will be using it for. They will try to get the best laptop for your needs and in your price range.

Not always true.
Sometime they get a bonus for selling certain laptops so are more likely to drive you down that route.
PC World also sell laptops that nobody else sells (cheap own brand badged laptops) that they are also encouraged to sell.
I would NOT trust someone in PC world.
