We have a desk top, non wireless. Since my son plugged in the xbox live we have lost internet on it. The wires are plugged in. It says we need to put in the ISP address. How do I find what the address is?

Do you mean your IP address?, if so then go to the Command Prompt and type IPCONFIG and hit the ENTER key.

lol...that could be it.

Where's command prompt?
You shouldn't need to type in an IP address, they should all be automatically assigned by your router!

It was when we first set it up but since he connected the xbox live it hasn't worked and it's asking for an address.

Do you think it could be something as simple as the wires not being right...?
What is your setup like?

is it a BT based broadband, or virgin cable?

also I assume you have a router? what sort? (the box the wires plug into) make and model?

Go to your start menu and look for a program called RUN, select this and then type IPCONFIG and the ENTER. Like you mentioned, missing cable is possible

The router says 'ntl home broadband'

He had this internet before I moved in....I understood it a lot more when I had to install it myself

I have a feeling it has something to do with the crazy cat....
How many connection for ethernet cables has the NTL box got on it?
Question Author
Just one. The other says USB.
OK, thats a modem then, not a router. which means you can only have one device connected at a time.

The ideal solution would be to buy a cable router that would enable you to connect more than one thing at a time, if you are going to continue to swap the cables over then make sure both devices are set to obtain IP address automatically (I assume the computer already is as it was working) so on the Xbox goto the system blade, select settings and then network settings and make sure that is set to obtain automatically (DHCP) connect the wire to the XBOX and then turn off the cable modem for 30 sec and back on and the Xbox should pickup an IP, then, when you swap back to the computer you'll need to do the same with the modem.
