USB problem

My printer, scanner and mouse that are all connected to USB ports are working fine but whenever I attempt to plug in a card reader (internal or external), the computer recognises the new hard ware and then attempts to search for a driver (and even sometimes appear to download one) only to end up by saying there was an error and the device won't work.

I am particularly kicking myself because my old internal card reader had been working (though a USB port on it had given me the same error) but it would not read SDHC cards so I "upgraded". I tried different USB access pins on the mother board but with the same effect. I reverted to the old internal card reader and it is now not recognised. I cannot now use any USB port to read a memory card.

Can anyone help, please?
