Everything is explained here ^^^^^
You will either have to use the cable that came with the xbox to connect to your broadband router or buy the wireless adapter which isn't cheap but is the best option in my opinion.

sorry never mentioned I have no broadband yet, just an empty phone socket
Unfortunately you have to have a broadband connection for xbox live :(

yes thats what I want to know. I have just rang BT and I;m not even on their exchange so have to pay £125.00 to get connected!!
son just going through all this for his new flat, even though there is a BT telephone socket with a dial tone, he has still had to pay the connection fee as apparently the previous occupier used a different supplier and BT have to buy the line back. BT have told him not to arrange a broadband supply until both his line and the connection to the exchange are active. He is thinking of using Be there for his internet connection so if anyone has anything to say about them, I would be interested to hear any comments.
