Up until the Data protection act the electoral registers were available at Post Offices. Is there anyway to access old registers online. If you want to trace family in Birmingham but live in Wales can you access the old registers.

The electoral registers are not online at present but other stuff is. Try www.ukbmd.org.uk which will help you work out firstly which records are online for any given location, and secondly if not online where you need to go to read the stuff. You can also try the 1901 census online from the National Archives and the Mormon site www.familysearch.org, which is helpful but less detailed. Don't be put off by the fee charged for official documents uch as census returns or birth certificates - it's peanuts compared to the cost of travelling around and consulting documents. Good luck. PS the electoral rolls should be available in the relevant local studies library for the place you are researching.
