I need to back up all my photos as well as my documents in Windows XP. Can someone recommend an external hard drive, and is this process easy for a non-technical silver surfer to do ??

Argos, Seagate 250gb. Excellent value at £39.99. So simple to use.
Think you still get a free pouch for it as well.
I think you should buy a 500gb least, not 250gb.
500gb is £49.99.
The 500gb is a much better buy, £10. more for 250gb!
You get a 4gb USB Stick free with 500gb.
WOW! that's a bonus!
1 TB £65
the 500gb is not usb driven though is it
Of course the 500gb is USB driven, simply Plug and Play.
If its really important data i would save to DVD/CD as a precaution, i know someone who put 1,000s of photos on an external drive & guess what , it broke !! bigtime..
i second that answer of chas2008 if its for keeping files safe you don't need to access regularly cd/dvd is the safest option,
i lost a lot of files when my western digital external failed no explanation nothing
was accessible one day, that was it
I'll third the above.

I've had an external hard drive die on me too, luckily I keep all my important stuff on at least 4 hard drives. One backup onto one hard drive is not a safe backup.

I have got all my photos on CDs, but not my documents from Word. Would it be a better idea to save word documents on CDs ?
Only you can answer that as only you know how important they are.

all I can say is they are a lot safer on a decent quality CD stored correctly than they are on an external hard drive.
