Personally, when I had a look at the N97 I found it to be a bit of a disappointment. The OS is a little sluggish (because the hardware is almost identical to that of the n95) and the slide annoyed me somewhat.
I went for the N900 (http://www.nokia.co.uk/find-products/all-pho
nes/nokia-n900)
which is a superb replacement for a laptop - which happens to make calls. It is fast, can handle full web-pages including flash, video and so on. Oh, and it is an FM transmitter (i.e. good for the car). The keyboard is lovely too.
However, I would say that I was looking for something which would allow me to to do everything I can on a laptop. If you simply want a phone which does lots of other cool stuff (rather than a tiny laptop which makes calls) the N97 is probably not a bad bet.
I'd stick with Nokia regardless as the standard 3.5mm headphone jack and the mail for exchange program is something you'll love them for.
All the best
