I have the AVG 2011 free antivirus installed. A couple of days ago it said that the anti-virus and anti-spyware data bases are outdated and I am not fully protected. Have tried to "fix all" and update - this gets as far as analysing the updates then I get "general error". What's going on? Do I have to uninstall and start all over again? Many thanks.

ChuckFickens, have now tried that but result just the same. Any more suggestions?
It would seem you are not the only one having the problems..

From trawling some other forums some people are saying that a un-install and re-install does fix it, then others are saying it doesn't! I've also seen a few people saying that it doesn't work most the time, but then occasionally it does.

From everything I've seen it looks like a general AVG problem at the moment and there may not be anything you can do on your local computer to fix the problem, but give a reinstall a go, you've got nothing to loose.

Thank you. Will uninstall. Would you advise Avast as an alternative? I have Zone Alarm and Spybot.also.
The love of AVG, eh?

Use Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast is you insist on a free one.
They work better and are more consistent.
Seconded. I used to rate AVG, but lately it's been a PITA on mine and friends' machines. No problems since switching to Avast. : )
A couple of years ago,. when AVG 'stopped' updating correctly, I uninstalled it and switched to Avast, seems to do the job well enough.
