I am using an Acer Aspire laptop with a Windows Vista operating system.
I have AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition and the icon in the bottom right hand corner of my screen has a warning triangle over it.
When I open up the interface both the Anti-virus and Anti-spyware logos have the message "VDB check has failed" next to them.
I've clicked 'Fix All' and the update process begins and seems to get nearly to the end but then terminates and the message 'General Error' appears (within AVG).
Any help on how to fix it would be much appreciated!

This is related with improperly loaded virus database, which is mostly caused by these reasons:

A) Not enough operating memory during computer startup.

B) Corrupted virus database files.check your hard disk for errors (How-To article)

C) Conflict with other protection application(s)


Easy fix, completely remove AVG and install Avast.

I did, I've never looked back after having some real headaches with AVG.

Thanks Naz, have no idea what A B or C mean so will probably go for the easy fix, if nothing else it will at least make me think a pirate is protecting my computer every time I see it lol!

Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials Sophie : )
AVG (free) is crap these days.

Haha, fair enough; it's one of the few free ones I know and I know how to update it so it's been fine for me so far, time for a change pehaps though!

My AVG got to the stage where it just wouldn't update ... ever ... so it had to go, lol
