internet explorer

occasionally i get problems with internet explorer where the back and forward buttons don't work, or the home button or the add to favourites button. Anyway, i usually just shut down my browsing session and start it again and it's ok. However today it seems that even this does not solve the problem. Is this a well know problem with ie (8 i think) or is there something i need to download to fix it (no sugestions of mozilla/ff please!)
