Ok. Can you bear with me - I am new to this! I have an HP NX9005 laptop. I want to be able to connect to the internet when I am in a remote location ie without a telephone ext. I don't need to connect to any other pc's and I don't need to share files. I am not sure what other hardware I need to do this. Do I need an infrared port or something? Dave.

Basically a PCMCIA wireless card (credit card size with fits into a slot on the laptop) of some type.

If you mean remote location such as a train station or an airport then a wireless PCMCIA card to pick up Internet access through what are called Wi-Fi hotspots.

If you mean the middle of a muddy field then you could look at a GSM card. Basically a mobile phone used as a modem although I wouldn't recommend these.

I have checked on the device manager and it lists an 02micro026933 card bus controller. Do I have to buy a compatible PCMCIA card or will any card work. Cheers.

Dave

If it says cardbus this refers to the Type III PCMCIA type of card - so you should be able to run Type I, II or III cards. Typically a wireless adapter will be a Type II card so I would say you can use any card.

Worth checking that you haven't got wireless already installed as some of the HP laptops have it pre-installed with a button to turn on/off.
