2nd best, run a decent quality phone extension upstairs and plug the router in to a new telephone point upstairs (note I said a decent quality extension cable)
Worst (but possibly easiest) option would be to buy a wireless adaptor for your computer (assuming it's not already wireless enabled) and plug the router in downstairs and connect to it wireless from your computer upstairs.

The wireless technology seems to be the best option. If your provider is Sky then you are likely to receive a USB wireless Dongle for this matter. If you dont receive it, call your provider stating that your computer will be fair from your telephone socket and that you will not be able to make the connections due to cables provided by sky are not long enough. Usually the Ethernet cables from any provider are just 1.5 metre long. (i dont know why) probably due to loss of signal ?
However if you use a laptop they are usually wireless enabled and you are likely to set up your laptop to acess to the internet wirelessly.
If you use a Desktop computer the best possible option is a Usb Dongle and you can ask for it (for no extra cost) your provider. Make sure you state the reasons why you want and that otherwise you will not be able to make the right connection.
Hope this helps

It is practical as you have no cables running around your room. Since i have purchased a laptop, i have always used it wireslly anywhere i go. Its good and add no messing around with cables. Off course you have to know the principles of wireless security otherwise you will be letting other people use your internet without your authorization.
