Just tried to get onto youtube for my usual morning fix and I have been told that i have to register with google. To do this I have to give them my mobile phone number apparently. I don't want to as I only use it for emergencies and don't want other messages clogging it up. I've told them this but have received no reply and still can't access youtube. Anyone else had this problem?

I think you can get round this, I did.

Cant remember what I did now, but I got the window asking for mobile number and eventualy got round it.

I think I went in and out of the registration process 3 or 4 times then it no longer asked me.
Exactly the same thing. Absolutely infuriating - there's a flag saying "we are doing this for greater security" but not explaining just how it achieves that. There is an option to enter the email and password of an existing google account. I have done this but it claims it's wrong (I know it's correct). Doing it the other way, as though setting it up from scratch, requires the mobile input as tigerlelly says and I too don't want to give mine out. If as VHG says there's a way around that I'm all ears, but even then still hacked off at youtube for what seems a needless change.

Their "help forum" is cluttered with people voicing various issues about this new system. I want to raise this thing about the mobile number but tigerlelly where did you contact them about this? I can't any contact details anywhere, just as usual FAQs and the forum.
They use your mobile number once and that's it. They send you a txt message which, if I remember correctly, has a code which you have to enter. The idea seems to be to stop people signing up with another person's id, which is a bit daft as you can still choose whatever anonymous user name you want and is available !

Hi backdrifter,
I went through all the palaver until it got to the 'verify your account' page where I clicked on 'report your issue' and ticked the box to say that I didn't want to give my phone number to google. I expected them to come up with an alternative but nothing from them so far. I already have a user name and a password for youtube so it all seems a bit OTT to me. Very annoying!
Supposing you don't have a mobile phone!!

I hate the assumption these days that everybody has a mobile. Loads of people don't (the sensible ones! ;o) )
Same problem here - not only need to link account with Google, but when I try it tells me that it's already linked to another Google account - which is funny because I don't have another one. This whole 'security' issue is becoming ridiculous - I've already taken issue with my bank over how difficult it is for me to access my own account (I'm seriously thinking about keeping my money under the mattress in future); I even had to produce my passport to get a library card! Now I can't even access a few bleeping videos. Some poor soul wanted to be my 'friend' on Youtube. Now they'll think I'm stuck up and don't want to know. I reckon we should all boycott Google for a month instead of meekly jumping through whatever hoop they put in front of us.
I got round it too...cant remember for the life of me how though. I think I more or less did same as VHG.
