Anyone know of a company that will transport a passenger in their wheelchair for a reasonable journey i.e. London area to Southampton.

Ask the taxi firms who do airport runs.
I'd call London to Southampton a more unreasonable distance than reasonable. A taxi is probably your best bet.
Do the Red Cross do something like that? If not they may be able to suggest a solution.
british rail do assisted trips .
South West trains, who operate from Waterloo to Southampton have an assisted travel service for disabled passengers. This is from their website:

To make an Assisted Travel Booking please call our Assisted Travel team on 0800 52 82 100 (freephone) or 0800 6920 792.
If this is for a cruise then many cruise companies have a deal with a coach company who pick people up from all over the UK and take them to Southampton.

Of course if it is not for a cruise then ignore my comment.
^^^British Rail???

They've not existed for 18 years!

However, as Jackdaw33 suggests, a taxi (or other local travel arrangements) to Waterloo might be best, where staff will assist the passenger onto the train (using a ramp to access the dedicated wheelchair space). At Southampton the train will be met by staff who will assist with the transfer to the taxi rank there. I've run a railway station and such trouble-free transfers are simply routine.

All London black cabs are wheelchair accessible.
Jackdaw33 has provided the telephone number for SouthWest Trains.
Mobility Taxis provide wheelchair accessible taxis from Southampton Central station: 023 8089 9291
