VSO Experiences?

I want to begin travelling and possibly doing some volunteer work. Anyone tried VSO? My mum's friend has a son in his late twenties and he recently came back from the program saying how good of an experience it was. I've given some tentative thought to giving this a go, but I don't want to go swanning around doing volunteer work until I have some sort of idea of what I'd possibly be getting myself into. Perhaps this would be a nice break from the norm?
