ibizaboy there are so many places to stay and visit, it might help to know of your interests. There is a wealth of history including Osbourne House and Carisbroke Castle. The walking ( if you are able ) is second to none , many areas have been designated areas of outstanding natural beauty. The beaches are simply beautiful and range from endless sand to shingle and pebble. The fishing is good too. Now, where to stay , I would recommend you stayed central in Newport ( The County Town ) and used buses to travel the length and breath according to taste. Most of all though....just come, you won't regret it !!
if you don't drive, this is a good place to start

thanks for your reply. walking, beaches and history are our likes, also wish to visit the needles.....have been told some areas are nicer to stay than others, but a central area would be good so we can walk or bus about.....
do you either have children or are you in your 90's? if neither of the above apply, don't go to the isle of death, sorry wight
Have to echo what bednobs says including great place to visit to see run down British seasides from the 50s.
If you r over 50 try Warners they have two holiday resorts on the Isle of Wight, food good and theres entertainment every night, no kids allowed.
Public transport is horrendously expensive on the IoW, try and get a week ticket if they are available. There is an interesting tank museum between Cowes and Newport just a few steps off the bus route. It is also good for fossil hunting on the southern facing beaches after stormy weather.
