hotel or b&b in or near brighton
I am looking for a hotel or b&b for a couple of nights towards the end of august that is not a dump (of which there are many), but does not charge an arm and a leg. We need parking close by, which does not also charge an arm and a leg. We don't need to be actually in brighton, up to 5 or 6 miles away would be OK. Does anyone have any recommendations. Don't mind somewhere fairly basic and simple but would like it to be clean and in a reasonable area (where the car won't get stolen!).

Rottingdean is just along the coast from Brighton, with a regular bus service along the seafront.

I guess that depends upon what you mean by reasonably priced. Usually the prices are reasonable, but once again, during school holidays prices rocket out of proportion. We have stayed in a couple of the sea front hotels and whilst I might consider £50-£60 reasonable for a hotel that is in real need of refurbishment, nearer to £100 I don't. On top of which there is the £25 ish per night to park the car. Rottingdean I will have to look at - we stayed there many years ago and it was not bad.
We stayed at Myhotel in the centre of Brighton and thought it was brilliant. Not the cheapest, but very good (about £100.00 a night). Alternatively stayed in Littlehampton (not that far away)' in the Selbourne House Bed and Breakfast, excellent value, about £35.00 per night per person. Lovely host and not too far from Brighton. No problem with parking, Brighton a nightmare.
This is about 12 miles away but it's the VERY BEST accommodation I've ever stayed in (anywhere in the world!):

It's got the comfiest beds, the softest towels (loads and loads of them!), the biggest range of complimentary toiletries and just about every other 'little luxury' that you might want. The tea and coffee making facilities aren't just limited to the usual Nescafe and PG Tips; there are a whole range of teas and coffees supplied. Further, you even get complimentary wine in your room!
Breakfast has to be pre-ordered the evening before (specifying the time that you'd like to be served) but that's only so that your scrambled eggs with smoked salmon (for example) can be served to perfection.
It takes around 20 to 25 minutes to get into heart of Brighton (or you could simply drive to Burgess Hill station and take the train for a 14 minute journey). There's some on-site car parking (with no problems parking in the street anyway), in a very pleasant area of Burgess Hill.

train isn't an option sadly we are visiting some small villages in bedfordshire first and then going on to brighton. only reason for trip to brighton is to visit family, unfortunately they don't have the space to accommodate us. it isn't our main holiday, have already had one with another to come hence why we want something cheap, happy with cheerful but really don't want a dirty dump which according to some of the reviews on tripadvisor some of them are - including by all accounts both of the travelodges which is most unusual as they usually come up to at least a basic good standard. thanks for the suggestions though, was looking at worthing actually. it is the parking which makes such a difference, a hotel costing £70 to £100 a night is one thing, but then having to pay £25 per night to park the car is adding insult to injury. goodness knows what americans think, having to pay in a hotel to park your car would be (is)unheard of !!
Just found this on Bing, anyway I have just come back from Brighton and stayed at the Grand hotel, you may like to check this hotel out when staying in Brighton again? Lik below for more information.
